Climate Colloquium: melting icebergs and sea level rise with Sybren Drijfhout and Detlef Lohse

MELTING ICEBERGS AND SEA LEVEL RISE

The Climate Centre of the University of Twente is pleased to invite you to the second edition of the Climate Colloquia. In this edition, prof. Detlef Lohse (UT) speaks about the complex dynamics involved in glacial ice melting within oceanic environments. Prof. Sybren Drijfhout (Dutch Meteorological institute KNMI, Universities of Southampton & Utrecht) focuses on the destabilization of the Antarctic Ice Sheet caused by our changing climate and the extreme sea level rise that results from this: Europe's greatest threat from global warming. Of course, there will be time for questions and discussion afterwards.

  • What: Climate Colloquium
  • When: Monday 26 February, 15:30-17:30
  • Where: Central hall Langezijds (ITC)
  • Registration: Click here

about The speakers

Prof. Detlef Lohse & prof. Sybren Drijfhout

  • Prof. Sybren Drijfhout

Sybren Drijfhout works mainly at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute where he is PI of the Science track in the Dutch Knowledge program on sea-level rise, and project-leader on the making of new sea-level rise scenarios for the Netherlands issued in 2023. He also works for 1 day/per week as professor Climate Dynamics at Utrecht University and as professor Climate Physics at the University of Southampton. He was lead author in the latest IPCC report on climate change for the chapter on ocean, cryosphere, and sea-level change, where he was responsible for parts on ocean currents, in particular the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. The AMOC was his main research topic before he got involved into sea-level rise projects, together with abrupt climate change (tipping points) and large-scale ocean-atmosphere interaction.

  • Prof. Detlef Lohse

Detlef Lohse got his PhD at the University of Marburg in Germany in 1992, on the fully developed turbulence. After some time as postdoc in Chicago and Marburg again, in 1998 he became Chair of Physics of Fluids at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, where he as been ever since. He is  also Member of the Max Planck Society and of the Max-Planck Institute in Göttingen/Germany. His present research focus is on turbulence, thermal convection, multiphase flow, and on micro- and nanofluidics (bubbles, drops, inkjet printing, wetting). He and his group do both fundamental and more applied science.

the CLIMATE COLLOQUIa

The Climate Centre of the University of Twente is pleased to launch a new, inspirational lecture series: the Climate Colloquia. In this series, renowned scientists, innovators, and changemakers will inspire you with presentations of their work on combatting climate change through transdisciplinary solutions. After each lecture, there is time for discussion and meetings with fellow scientists, teachers and students, and to create connections across the boundaries of our faculties – and beyond our university.

BECOME PART OF THE CLIMATE CENTRE COMMUNITY

Do you want to work together to create a sustainable future for our planet? Then come to the Climate Colloquium and become part of the Climate Centre’s vibrant community. We welcome all students, staff and partners who want to contribute to climate solutions through concerted actions, knowledge, and expertise development.
