Inaugural lecture Professor dr. Matthijs Noordzij: Wearables in Mental Health Care 12 October

On 12 October, we invite you to Prof Dr Matthijs Noordzij's lecture at the University of Twente. The central question: 'Wearables: Compassionate Technology or Stress Trigger?' Wearable technologies, such as the Fitbit, Garmin or Apple Watch, are booming. Many wear them for sports performance or to gain insight into their daily activities, sleep patterns or even stress levels. It has been shown that these technologies can offer positive experiences for certain groups. But do they actually provide the benefits they promise? And do they include unforeseen side effects or negative consequences?

During his oration, Prof Dr Noordzij will elaborate on recent studies, both within and outside the mental health sector, on the possible pros and cons of using wearables. For some, might not constant self-monitoring actually lead to more stress? Or in certain scenarios, does it offer an opportunity to make care more personal and empathetic?

We hope to welcome you and reflect together on the role of wearables in mental health care.
