Midterm research evaluation: looking back at three years of proud work

This midterm research self-evaluation report comes at the midpoint of the six-year research evaluation cycle. Three years ago, we received useful feedback and recommendations, this report sheds light on the steps we have taken. We made progress in sharpening our academic profile, one of the main concerns of the last evaluation. We have composed a multiannual plan to set a dot on the horizon. We have worked on making our impact more explicit, and having a clearer understanding of what impact we wish to make. Even now, when facing financial challenges, the multiannual plan remains our chosen path, while choices are being made.

BMS is a vibrant and impactful faculty, with many talented and passionate colleagues. This passion and our unique technology-social sciences outlook, are something to be proud of, and we are glad to share this pride with you.

Self-evaluation report

The midterm research self-evaluation report is now available. This report has five sections: introducing our faculty, providing context to the financial situation at the UT, looking back at the previous research evaluation, demonstrating our impact and accomplishments, and looking ahead using the multiannual plan.

The full report, and all accompanying documents, can be found on the Research Support website.

Enjoy reading! We are curious about your thoughts, you can always reach out to Tom Boogerd of the BMS Research Support Office with your ideas, recommendations or feedback.

Site visit

The self-evaluation report is one part of a research evaluation, a site visit by an (external) committee is another part. For BMS, this will take place on the 11th and 12th of November, with a committee consisting of members from university of Leiden, Münster, Groningen and an internal member from ITC. This committee will have several panel interviews: with the faculty board, department and section chairs, theme chairs and incentive grant receivers, the faculty council, research support, HR and the Career Committee, and PhDs. The committee will also visit our BMS Lab. Based on the self-evaluation report, and the conclusions from the different panel interviews, the committee will share their evaluation of research at BMS, and give us a set of recommendations.

A word of appreciation

This report is co-written by Tom Boogerd and Bernard Veldkamp. To get viewpoints from BMS at large, a writing team was composed with members from different departments. We want to express our gratitude to our writing team, who delivered feedback and set the outline for this work: Barbara Kump, Cindy Poortman, Janke Rademaker, Marieke van Rooij, and Sven Zebel. We want to additionally thank Barend van der Meulen and Susan McKenney for reading along, and our faculty board for their feedback and inspiration. Lastly, we want to thank Shaunie Schutten for coordinating many practical affairs of the site visit and her all-round support.
