Designing a chair for the North Sea Jazz Festival

For my Bachelor Assignment I am designing and making a chair for the North Sea Jazz Festival. This chair will have a rope ladder functioning as seating and will look something like this.

The chair is designed for the Congo square, a place where festival visitors will come to enjoy music and food. They will hop on and off the chairs but still want a luxurious and authentic experience. Right now the square is full with folding seats, but the visitors would like to sit more comfortably.

The festival takes place in Ahoy Rotterdam and there the stages have been given various names of rivers. Like the Nile, the Maas, or the Amazon. My idea involves the user in making a chair of his own, by collecting the pieces of wood at the different stages. Andrea helped me to engrave the pieces of wood of the ladder, with the different rivers. I used pine wood that I sanded of 64 mm by 18 mm with a length of 500 mm. Because I sanded it the edge was harder to find for calibrating, I recommend not to sand it.

A week later me and two friends constructed the chair and a sidetable. The overall result of the chair and the side table was as follows:

Krukje

Stoel
