This course is organized by the University of Twente and FH Aachen, University of Applied Sciences, acknowledged by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and by the Netherlands National Communications Security Agency (NLNCSA). Supported by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy.

  • COURSE OVERVIEW
    Practical experiments

Each day of the course the participants will be able to apply the material from the lectures to practical table-top experiments, e.g. with radiated emission, leaky boxes and antennas, crosstalk and filters. Students will perform experiments themselves (2-4 people in one group).

    • Introduction to TEMPEST. Exploring the concept, current threats, and the roles of NATO, EU and various countries like the Netherlands and Germany,
    • Certification standards and procedures, where necessary,
    • Electromagnetic security: phenomena and signals, threats and countermeasures,
    • Information technology and signal processing,
    • Understanding electromagnetic fields and waves, propagation, radiated emission,
    • Key equipment for electromagnetic measurements,
    • Antenna basics: beamwidth, gain, bandwidth and noise level,
    • Zoning and shielding for electromagnetic protection,
    • Techniques for measuring shielding effectiveness in various structures and installation errors,
    • Designing and implementing effective electromagnetic filters,
    • Identifying design errors in electromagnetic filtering,
    • Basic installation, shielding, filtering, earthing,
    • Theory of crosstalk in electromagnetic systems, separation, cabling,
    • TEMPEST measurements, based on the MIL-STD 461/AECTP.
  • TEACHING STAFF
  • PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

BS.c./ MS.c. in Electrical Engineering & Experience (or in a related technical field) is required to grasp the material of the course fully.

We also welcome participants who do not hold a technical degree. Although an in-depth understanding of certain parts might not be accessible, you can still engage with a large part of the content gaining a deeper understanding of TEMPEST and underlying electromagnetic phenomena.

  • INTENSIVE FUNDAMENTAL COURSES (3 DAYS)

The 3-day fundamental courses are typically part of our 5-day intensive TEMPEST & EMC training program. However, we can arrange a separate offering for the 3-day course if a group of 8 to 12 participants is interested.

    • Shielding
    • Filtering
    • Crosstalk and electrical separation
