Completing the Master’s in Environmental & Energy Management with a specialisation in Water Management will open up a broad range of career opportunities. You could pursue a career at many different types of  organisations, from government institutions, consultancy firms, research institutions, non-governmental organisations to the private sector. You could also opt for an academic career and follow up your Master’s with a PhD, or you could start up your own business!

Type of degree

When you have completed this Master's with a specialisation in Water Management, you will receive a Master’s degree in Environmental & Energy Management, along with the title Master of Science (MSc.). Your specialisation will be mentioned specifically on your diploma supplement, highlighting your specialised knowledge and skills in water management.

Job opportunities

Worldwide, governments and organisations are confronted with a wide range of water-related issues. Your expertise will be highly welcomed within a variety of organisations from government institutions, consultancy firms, research institutions, non-governmental organisations to the private sector. Within such organisations, you could work on projects regarding wastewater management, flood resilience, drought, water pollution, or climate adaptation strategies, to name just some examples.

UT alumni with this specialisation currently work in various positions and organisations, for example:
  • Regional Sustainability Manager Europe at PepsiCo
  • Consultant at the International Water and Sanitation Cetre (IRC) – WASH Systems
  • Project Manager Water Technology at Paques wastewater and gas treatment

Your expertise in the field of water management can lead you to many different career paths. You could choose to work in the governmental sector, fulfilling the role of policy adviser or project manager at a municipality, province, water authority, ministry, or supranational government, or you might find a job as a manager in the industrial sector. Or what about starting a career within an (environmental) consultancy firm or working on projects for clean and safe water within a non-profit organisation? Some of your future potential employers include the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat in Dutch), water supply companies like Vitens, Waternet or PWN, wastewater treatment companies like Veolia or Suez, consultancy firms like AWN consulting or Witteveen+Bos, or non-profit organisations like Water Aid or UNICEF.

CONTINUE AS A RESEARCHER: OBTAIN A PHD

Instead of pursuing a professional career right away after completing your Master’s degree, you can opt to follow a PhD programme at Twente Graduate School (TGS). This involves spending four years studying a particular research area in-depth at one of our research institutes. Obtaining your PhD earns you the title of Doctor (Dr).
