As a graduate of the Master’s in European Studies, you will be well-equipped to start a career in the diverse landscape of European policymaking. Whether in governmental institutionsnon-governmental organisationsconsultancies, or research institutes: with your knowledge you will be able to contribute to shaping policies at various levels within the European context. You could also pursue an academic career and follow up your Master’s with a PhD.

TYPE OF DEGREE

When you have completed this Master’s, you will receive a Master’s degree in European Studies. Also, you can title yourself Master of Science (MSc).

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

The demand for experts who understand the complexities of Europe extends well beyond Brussels. Of course, you could well end up working for one of the European Union’s many agencies or for one of the hundreds of lobby groups in Brussels whose aim is to influence European policy, but you can also work in national governments, private firms, the non-profit sector, and NGOs. Whichever career path you take, with your broad understanding of the inner workings of Europe, you will be able to contribute to solutions to many different challenges involving international relations, policy analysis, and cross-cultural collaboration.

UT alumni with a Master’s degree in European Studies work in various positions and organisations. For example:
  • Advisor International Cultural Relations at the European Commission
  • Director of Lobbying and Policy at INretail
  • Integration consultant at the Municipality of Deventer

Graduates of this Master’s find interesting, challenging jobs soon after graduation, as policymakers, policy advisers, lobbyists, or researchers, to name some examples. In your future career, you could focus on policymaking within government ministries, local authorities or even the European Parliament, but you could also work at international organisations like the United Nations, World Bank, IMF, or OECD. Another option is to start a career within the private sector, working at banks, insurance companies, IT companies, energy suppliers and all sorts of other companies that deal with a lot of (changing) EU regulations and policies, but that might also seek expertise in finding European funding and subsidies. Or what about joining NGOs like Greenpeace, Amnesty International or Doctors Without Borders? There is a wide variety of options open to you!

Continue as a researcher: obtain a PhD

Instead of pursuing a professional career right away after obtaining your Master’s degree, you can opt to follow a PhD programme at Twente Graduate School (TGS). This involves spending four years studying a particular research area in-depth at one of our research institutes. Obtaining your PhD earns you the title of Doctor (Dr).

Start a business

At UT, we highly encourage entrepreneurship. This University is the birthplace of a large number of high-tech spin-off companies that market developed technologies. You could use your research or even inventions stemming from your master’s thesis and/or your PhD research to start up your own innovative company as well! UT has been voted the most entrepreneurial university in the Netherlands four times in a row. We have a unique approach of putting scientific knowledge to practical use and turning our expertise and yours into solutions that people and society actually need. As a catalyst for meaningful entrepreneurship, we offer you the Novel-T foundation and their start-up hub Incubase on campus.

You could use your research or even inventions to start up your own innovative nanotechnology company, just like some of our former students did. Think for example of ECsens, a high-tech research start-up of one of our alumni that focuses on Lab-on-a-Chip platforms for liquid biopsies. Will you be the next one to start up your own business?
