Guidelines for using AI during your studies at UT

We are excited to discuss a topic that has been creating waves in the academic world: Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and their impact on the way we approach assignments. We understand that with multiple messages on this topic, an overview would be valuable. Therefore, we have created a webpage that hosts all our current releases and publications for your convenience. In this article, we listed some guidelines for you using AI during your studies.

When it comes to using AI tools for assignments, there are varying degrees of permissibility. It may be allowed for specific purposes, restricted to certain tools, or completely open. However, it is essential for you, as students, to acknowledge the use of AI in your work. Therefore, if you choose to employ any form of AI, remember to include a comprehensive list of the tools used in the appendix. This list should include all the tools you used during the course of your work.

To simplify this process, we have crafted a useful sentence that you can include at the beginning of your appendix: "During the preparation of this work, I (and my fellow authors) used [NAME TOOL / SERVICE] to [REASON]. After using this tool/service, we thoroughly reviewed and edited the content as needed, taking full responsibility for the final outcome."

Even if you have not used any AI tools, it is important to acknowledge that fact as well. In such cases, simply include a statement stating, "During the preparation of this work, I (and my fellow authors) used no artificial intelligence tools."

We strongly recommend disclosing all the software employed in your assignments because you never know if they possess hidden AI-based features! This includes writing tools, search engines, citation managers, and data analysis tools. For instance, text processors like Word, spelling and grammar checks, or even reference managers may contain AI tools designed to enhance language and provide better assistance.

Just as a reminder: using AI tools without explicit consent from your instructor or failing to acknowledge the tool in your appendix will be considered academic misconduct. We want you to succeed and learn, but it is crucial to stick to the rules and maintain academic integrity.
