From black-and-white thinking to grey: discover how you can help reduce polarisation

On 1 October, it’s Diversity Day in the Netherlands once again. And on this day, we challenge everyone to explore the issue of polarisation and what you can do to counter it, whether you work or study at UT. In a time when the tone of discussions seems to be growing harsher and extreme views are increasingly taking the spotlight – both within and outside our university – the open exchange of ideas and experiences is becoming more difficult.

Conversations about issues such as sustainability, climate change, diversity and inclusion, or the tension between science and personal beliefs, increasingly seem to fuel polarisation. Polarisation itself doesn’t have to be negative – we don’t always have to agree with each other, and it’s sometimes necessary to clearly express what’s going on or what you believe – but when we stop openly listening to one another, it breeds mistrust. As a result, we are less able to find solutions together, collaborate constructively, or learn from each other.

Workshop with practical tips and tools

So how can you contribute less to polarisation – or ideally, not at all? And what can you do to actively counter polarisation, or better yet, prevent it? You’ll learn all this during the workshop on 1 October (from 13:30 to 15:00). In this interactive workshop, you’ll be introduced to practical strategies for communicating in a divided world. You’ll not only learn how to handle sensitive topics and strong opinions, but you’ll also work together on solutions that you can apply straight away. Whether at work, during your studies, or at home with friends, housemates, or family.

Organised by Dare to be Grey
Jordy Nijenhuis, director of Dare to be Grey, will be leading the workshop. Dare to be Grey is an organisation focused on bridging divides and fostering open, constructive conversations. Discover how you can make a difference and contribute to creating an environment where everyone is committed to reducing polarisation. Sign up today! Any questions or comments? Feel free to send an email to the co-initiators of the DE&I Team.
