Queen Máxima visits Quantum for Everyone in Enschede

Her Majesty Queen Máxima will visit Quantum for Everyone, a special event as part of World Quantum Day, on the evening of Monday, 14 April. The event is organised by the University of Twente and Quantum Delta NL, an initiative supported by the National Growth Fund.

One hundred years of quantum physics: past, present and future

The evening programme Quantum for Everyone introduces the general public to quantum science and technology developments. Visitors will discover the impact and possibilities of this fast-growing technology through interactive demonstrations and expert presentations.

During the plenary programme, Queen Máxima will be explained the latest developments in quantum physics and technology. In 80 minutes, scientists from the University of Twente and Leiden University will take the audience on a journey through the history and future of quantum mechanics. In blocks of about 10 minutes, quantum physics will be explained, placed in a historical perspective and demonstrated. In addition, Queen Máxima will take part in two experiments together with students:

  • Quantum Eraser – This experiment demonstrates how knowing or erasing information about light paths affects quantum interference. It uses 3D-printed optical components, built by the University of Twente and ROC van Twente.
  • Olive Oil Test – A green laser reveals the red fluorescence of chlorophyll in extra virgin olive oil, showcasing quantum mechanics in everyday materials. This visually striking experiment highlights how fundamental physics is closer to daily life than one might expect.

After the presentations, the audience will have the chance to explore quantum concepts themselves during hands-on experiments.

World Quantum Day, celebrated annually on 14 April, is an initiative by scientists from more than 65 countries to raise awareness of the importance of quantum science and its impact on society. Quantum mechanics is the basis for many new technologies, from ultra-safe communications to advanced sensors and revolutionary computing power.
