Course Description
The course gives an overview of the application of power electronics and electrical machines in industry and transportation.
In industry applications power electronics is increasingly used to improve the efficiency of the processes. In the Netherlands about 40% of electrical energy is consumed by industry for pumping liquids, fans, process heating and cooling, and ligthing and air conditioning for buildings.
The transport sector is going through an electrification transformation where the combustion engines are replaced by power electronics and electric motors in order to reduce CO2 emissions.
Power electronics enables the integration of renewables and storage in electrical grids and improves the operation of off-grid systems.
- The course comprises four modules:
- Overview of industrial drives and application requirements,
- Overview of electrical transportation systems,
- Overview of power electronics in grids,
- A series of application case study lectures by external spreakers from Dutch Industry.
The course evalutation is based on general knowledge questions and assignments on specific case studies.
Goals
The main objective is to understand how power electronics is applied in systems and how the industriall, electric transportation and off-grid systems work.
Specific learning goals are to:
- Describe physical systems from an energy conversion point of view,
- Derive the energy conversion functions of the system,
- Understand the reasons for including safety margins in the system technical specifications,
- Understand the importance of reliability,
- Demonstrate the ability to de technical system integration in one or more case studies,
- Gain an understanding of the expectations of industry.
