TEMPEST & EMC training
- Organized by the University of Twente and FH Aachen, University of Applied Sciences
- Acknowledged by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI)
- Acknowledged by the Netherlands National Communications Security Agency (NLNCSA)
- Supported by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy
The 5-day intensive TEMPEST course provides a generic overview of the fundamental TEMPEST concepts and the key EMC measures to prevent compromising emanations.
Teaching staff:
Prof. Dr. Ir. Frank Leferink
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Hillgärtner
Dr. Robert Vogt-Ardatjew
Dr. Niek Moonen
Dr. Tom Hartman
Daria Nemashkalo, M.Sc.
Course overview
- Introduction to TEMPEST. Exploring the concept, current threats, and the roles of NATO, EU and various countries like the Netherlands and Germany,
- Certification standards and procedures, where necessary,
- Electromagnetic security: phenomena and signals, threats and countermeasures,
- Information technology and signal processing,
- Understanding electromagnetic fields and waves, propagation, radiated emission,
- Key equipment for electromagnetic measurements,
- Antenna basics: beamwidth, gain, bandwidth and noise level,
- Zoning and shielding for electromagnetic protection,
- Techniques for measuring shielding effectiveness in various structures and installation errors,
- Designing and implementing effective electromagnetic filters,
- Identifying design errors in electromagnetic filtering,
- Basic installation, shielding, filtering, earthing,
- Theory of crosstalk in electromagnetic systems, separation, cabling,
- TEMPEST measurements, based on the MIL-STD 461/AECTP,
- Practical experiments: with radiated emission, leaky boxes and antennas, crosstalk and filters. Students have to perform experiments themselves (2-4 people in one group)
Classification:
Unclassified. All materials provided during the course will be unclassified, ensuring you have access to the most up-to-date information and resources.
Prior knowledge:
BS.c./ MS.c. in Electrical Engineering & Experience.
To maximize the learning experience and achieve a 100% grasp of the material, a BS.c. and/or MS.c. Experience in Electrical Engineering is recommended. However, we also welcome participants with degrees in related technical Fields such as physics, computer science, and mathematics, as 80% of the content remains accessible. Even if you do not possess a technical degree, you can still engage with 50% of the material. Of course, the in-depth understanding of physics and EE is lost, but the impact can still be followed.
