On the 27th of June was the 3rd edition of the TechMed research day. This conference is a platform for young researchers and upcoming talent to showcase their work, practice their presentations with and build a network with peers.
The day started with an inspirational talk by the “drone-professor” from Saxion University of Applied Sciences. Professor Abeje Mersha shared his personal journey with the audience. He talked about his upbringing in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, about his journey to and time at the University of Twente, and about his work at Saxion. He encouraged to be open, to work together and to learn the local language wherever you go.
After the opening talk, there were several blocks of parallel sessions. Each block had two parallel sessions with talks and two parallel sessions of poster tours. All presentations and posters were assigned randomly to a presentation or poster session, respectively. Themed sessions were avoided to encourage participants to step outside their bubble; to a flavour of the research they would not see otherwise. In total, members from MIA (Lucas, Hannah, Patrick and Linda) gave two presentations and two posters.
At the end of the day, there was a prize ceremony at which 7 prizes were awarded. The prizes were given to the best 3 best presentations, 3 best posters+pitches and the research that was closest to being applied in practice.
One of the presentation prizes was won by Master student Linda ten Klooster (DAMUT/MIA) for her presentation about her work in which she improves the methods used for determining good locations and orientations of knee implants.
