On March 25, we proudly celebrated the official opening of the Cardiovascular Health Technology Centre, part of the University of Twente, TechMed Centre. In recognition of this milestone, we organised an inspiring event that brought together experts from academia, clinical practice, and industry to explore the latest innovations in cardiovascular health technology.
Inspiring Keynote Lectures
The event featured two insightful keynotes that set the tone for the day's discussions. Professor Pim van der Harst (University Medical Centre Utrecht, Head of the Department of Cardiology) gave a thought-provoking presentation titled "Artificial Intelligence: A New Horizon in Cardiology and Prevention." His session explored the transformative potential of AI in improving cardiovascular care and prevention, offering new perspectives on how technology is reshaping the field.
Later in the day, Professor Jolanda van der Velden (Amsterdam UMC, Chair of the Departments of Physiology & Experimental Cardiology) took the stage with her presentation titled "Building Muscle Strength: Multidisciplinary Research to Match Heart Failure Patients with the Most Optimal Treatment." She shared insights into how research is helping to identify the most effective treatments for heart failure patients, focusing on the crucial role of muscle strength in improving outcomes.
Thematic Pitches: Shaping the Future of Cardiovascular Research
Throughout the event, we also held thematic pitches highlighting the research at the heart of the Cardiovascular Health Technology Centre. Our research activities encompass a wide spectrum of technologies and areas within the cardiovascular field, involving a diverse team of biologists, chemists, computer scientists, engineers, mathematicians, pharmacologists, physicists, physicians, health services researchers, and social scientists. These themes will drive the future direction of our work, including the following key areas:
- Big Data and Artificial Intelligence | Dr. Jelmer Wolterink, University of Twente
- Computational Modelling | Dr. Kartik Jain, University of Twente
- Biomaterials | Annalise Anspach, University of Twente
- Biomedical Engineering and Personalized Medicine | Dr. Verena Schwach, University of Twente
- Cardiovascular Imaging | Dr. Erik Groot Jebbink, University of Twente
- Drug Delivery Systems | Dr. Islam Khalil, University of Twente
- Medical Devices | Ana Martins Costa MSc., University of Twente
- Rehabilitation and Personalized Care | Dr. Jasper Reenalda, University of Twente
- Technology Assessment | Dr. Mark Schuuring, University of Twente
Each of these themes represents an exciting area of innovation, and the researchers presented their latest findings, shedding light on the technologies and methodologies that will shape the future of cardiovascular healthcare.
Hands-On Innovation & Future Talent in Cardiovascular Health
During the break, attendees had the opportunity to visit a variety of demonstrations and posters by researchers from the University of Twente and partners. They also had the chance to gain hands-on experience with aspects of catheterisation procedures, including observing the CAG training offered by the TechMed Academy and Thorax Centrum Twente, designed specifically for cardiology residents (AIOS). This training provided participants with insights into the procedure, helping them better understand its intricacies and areas for development. Additionally, attendees could network and connect with fellow participants, enhancing the collaborative spirit of the event.
The Young@Heart session offered a platform for emerging talent, uniting young, talented, and ambitious scientists in the cardiovascular field, spanning both clinical and preclinical areas. This session highlighted the crucial role of fresh perspectives in shaping the future of cardiovascular innovation in the Netherlands. Representing the interests of these future leaders, Young@Heart is dedicated to ensuring the continued excellence of cardiovascular research and care in the country.
The Opening: Activating the Heart of Cardiovascular Innovation
The event concluded with an official celebration moment, where the core team collectively marked the opening of the centre. In a symbolic gesture, they performed an opening act in which veins, representing sources of energy, flowed toward the heart—symbolizing the Cardiovascular Health Technology Centre coming to life. This moment marked the official launch of the centre, setting it in motion and reaffirming its commitment to advancing cardiovascular health through innovation and collaboration.
Reflecting on the event, we are filled with pride and excitement about the knowledge shared, connections made, and the momentum gained in advancing cardiovascular healthcare.
