At the Engineering Fluid Dynamics group, we are dedicated to advancing the frontiers of acoustic research in the aviation industry, with a focus on precise sound measurements for a wide range of aircraft, from UAVs to large narrowbody aircraft. Our research takes flight at the renowned Twente Airport, a unique test location for aviation acoustics.
Twente Airport is the ideal testing location for sound measurements in the field. The airport is unique due to its low ambient noise level, limited air traffic, and long 3 km runway enabling precise and extensive testing opportunities. Furthermore, there is ample space and flexibility to test experimental innovations and make adjustments as needed if certain aircraft designs or configurations produce excessive noise. The mobile measurement system can be easily adjusted and optimized, allowing for repeated measurements until the desired noise production is achieved.

Testbed Infrastructure
The Twente Airport site is a fully secured and gated site. All safety regulations of a civil airport are adhered to. In conjunction with Technology Base, Twente airport is a unique location where safety and discretion for conducting high-risk and competition-sensitive activities and testing are ensured. Experimental aircraft can be tested within the secured airspace with all necessary legislative support provided by Technology Base.
Diverse Measurement Opportunities
Aeroacoustic measurements, facilitated by microphone phased arrays, offer a versatile approach for sound measurement across a wide range of aircraft types, spanning from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to commercial narrowbody aircraft. These type of measurements can be optimized for specific configurations by utilizing the in-house capabilities of the Univeristy of Twente and our regional and national partners.
