LANGUAGE POLICY
The University of Twente has established a general language policy. The UT Language Centre takes the language requirements for various groups within the University as the basis for its courses and assessment activities.
These language requirements are:
lecturers: CEF C2 (IELTS 7.5)
PhD students: CEF B2/C1 (IELTS 6.5)
students: CEF B2/C1 (IELTS 6.0/7.0, depending on the requirements set by the department)
support staff: variable, depending on their position
For more information about CEF, go to Dialang and CEF.
ASSESSMENT
Any member of the University of Twente can contact the UT Language Centre for an assessment of their English language proficiency. Such an assessment usually involves a self-test in the form of a computer language test, combined with an interview.
- There is a special assessment for lecturers, consisting of an interview about specific language learning needs, a general language test and a class assessment of a lecture or tutorial conducted in English. These assessment are arranged by the department or Faculty in which the lecturer works.
- The assessment of language proficiency for support staff consists of two parts: a digital language test and an interview which will be scheduled by the Faculty or service centre in which the employee works.
- Students who have the ambition to study at the University of Twente, but are insecure about their level of English, can do a self-test. This is not an official test that allows entry to the University, but merely a test to help you find out whether you need additional language training. For questions and further information, please contact the UT language Centre.
VALIDATION
For study or work abroad, proof of language competence is often required. The UT Language Centre validates language certificates and provides advice on possible ways to improve one’s language skills for specific needs further.
