Live stream: Opening of the Academic Year

Due to great interest in the Opening of the Academic Year 2014, the entries closed. Also the unique extra college of Daan Roosegaarde in the DesignLab is full. Producer Sven Figee has chosen the musicians for Cut the Track (dance track for UT).

The Opening of the Academic Year 2014 and the college of Daan Roosegaarde can be followed live via the live stream.

Extraordinary combinations and courage. That's what our modern age needs. Only then can we rise to the enormous challenges our society is facing. In this spirit, University of Twente is opening the 2014/2015 academic year with a programme dedicated to wonder, pioneering and entrepreneurship. A programme with design as its central concept.

The official opening of the academic year coincides with the opening of the university’s new DesignLab, which will harness rebellious creativity and ambition to redefine the boundaries of the possible. The Lab will be a cradle for innovation and inspiration, enabling collaboration across disciplines and with the business community.

The Netherlands’ Minister of Education, Culture and Science, Jet Bussemaker will address the audience at the opening festivities. She sees the Netherlands as a nation of free thinkers and creative minds. "Our great country is built on a successful combination that we could call creative pragmatism, or practical creativity."

No one embodies this spirit of creative pragmatism more than Daan Roosegaarde. This self-proclaimed ‘happy infiltrator’ is our guest speaker on 1 September. A graduate of Enschede’s Academy of Visual Arts (AKI), Roosegaarde is a designer, entrepreneur, artist, tech poet and winner of the prestigious Index Award. Dune, the Lotus Dome and the Smart Highway are just three of the many Studio Roosegaarde projects that have met with international acclaim. An ambitious new project seamlessly combines technology and art with the aim of reducing the smog that so often engulfs the city of Beijing.
