Biosensing Team Twente Showcasing Real-World Potential on Global Stage UT student team secures third place in SensUs competition

At the SensUs student competition 2024 in Eindhoven, the student team Biosensing Team Twente proudly secured third place for the Potential Translation of their biosensor!

“This is a remarkable achievement for us, as we became an official student team of the University of Twente just this year”, says team captain Caterina Cattabriga.  Competing against 17 international student teams at the forefront of innovative biosensing technologies, this achievement underscores the strong potential of the team’s device to make a real-world impact in future healthcare.

The student team designed an aptamer-based biosensor to support early hospital discharge through real-time health monitoring. By providing continuous disease surveillance with minimal discomfort for the patient, it offers a safer, more comfortable option for managing health conditions under medical supervision.

SensUs competition

The SensUs competition aims to raise awareness about the possibilities that biosensing can offer to the life of patients and to health care in general. Student teams from all over the world compete to create a biosensor for a different health problem each year. The students not only have to design and create a biosensor, but they also have to think of and present a specific use case for their sensor.

Participating in the SensUs competition is not just about competing – it is an opportunity to innovate and collaborate on a global scale. “The competition pushes us to think outside the box, develop and refine our technologies, and pitch our solutions to a panel of academic and industry experts”, explains Danail Tsanov, also team captain, “it’s a thrilling experience that challenges both technical and soft skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.”

Biosensing Team Twente

Biosensing Team Twente is a student team of the University of Twente backed by researchers of MESA+ institute and the TechMed Centre, as well as the external sponsor Benchmark. Each year a new group of students builds a biosensor for an application selected by the SensUs organisation to compete with other teams from different universities around the globe.

Besides competing, being part of the Biosensing Team Twente is a unique opportunity to build skills that go far beyond the classroom. Students gain hands-on experience with advanced biosensing technologies, learn how to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems and develop essential soft skills. Additionally, the exposure opens doors to networking, internships, and career opportunities in healthcare technology and beyond.

With this success in mind, Biosensing Team Twente is now looking for motivated students to join the Biosensing Team Twente for the 2025 SensUs competition. If you are excited to work in an international, multidisciplinary team tackling real-world healthcare challenges alongside your studies, they’d love to hear from you.
