Knowledge is one of the University of Twente’s most valuable assets. As stated in our Shaping2030 strategy, it is our mission to be the ultimate People First university. We are committed to enabling innovative academic research, education, and knowledge transfer, and international collaboration is essential in this.

Knowledge Security: taking care of what we share.

Knowledge Safety Team

The Knowledge Safety Team (KST) is responsible for safeguarding knowledge security risks of our research, education and projects. Knowledge security is closely linked to export control that is present in various processes within the UT community: international cooperation and agreements, the recruitment of international staff, opportunities provided by foreign investors, and digital and physical access to the UT campus.

 The main tasks of the KST are:

  • to ensure UT compliance with international sanctions and export control law;
  • to reduce and mitigate knowledge security risks for the UT community and research infrastructure;
  • to provide a support platform to the UT community on knowledge security and export control.

The KST is also in regular contact with UNL and the Ministry of OCW, and occasionally with the DG Research and Innovation on new policy measures as proposed by the EU, the Ministry, or politicians . When such measures are likely to have an impact on the openness of science, academic freedom, or fundamentally changes the way-of-working of universities the UT sees it as a responsibility to explain the impacts of such measures. The KST will then propose alternatives that match with the way of working at universities, encourage the international character of universities and respect academic freedom in line with the Council Recommendation on Research Security (2024).

The KST consists of eight members that work in different departments and faculties at the UT.

  • Senior Policy Advisor Knowledge Safety & Export Control
  • Integral Safety Manager
  • Legal Advisor
  • Director Human Resources
  • Expert on Missile Technology Control Regime
  • Chief Information Security Officer
  • Full Professor
