Coffee corners University of Twente introduce Billie Cup Reusable cups replace disposable ones

Feel like a good cup of coffee or tea at the UT campus? Starting this spring, you can do so at the University of Twente in a Billie Cup! Caterer Appèl will introduce this system with reusable cups at all coffee corners from Monday 21 March. The Billie Cup replaces the current disposable cups. Thanks to the new system, the UT expects to save more than 90,000 disposable cups every year: a great step towards a sustainable campus.

Farewell to disposables

The introduction of the Billie Cup fits with the UT's ambition to reduce the amount of waste we produce on campus. By 2030, the UT aims to have a 'waste-free campus'. Reducing the number of disposable cups is particularly important because they are difficult or impossible to recycle and therefore almost always end up in the incinerator. And yet the production of disposable cups consumes energy and raw materials. Obviously, this is not sustainable. A Billie Cup, on the other hand, will last for years and is easily recyclable at the end of its life.

The Billie Cup is already in use at more locations in the Netherlands and Belgium, including several other universities. A cup bought at the UT can be exchanged for a new one there - and vice versa of course. On billiecup.be you can find more information and an overview of all the locations.

How it works

Billie Cup is a system with reusable, exchangeable cups. When you order for the first time, you pay a deposit of 1 euro and you get your drink in a Billie Cup instead of a disposable cup. Do you get a new drink later? Then you can exchange your Billie Cup for a clean one free of charge.
