Guest Lecture Prof Nigel Brandon - Dean of Engineering at Imperial College Innovation in Electrochemical Technologies for the Low Carbon Energy Transition

We invite you to join the guest lecture by Professor Nigel Brandon, a renowned academic and entrepreneur in the field of sustainable energy and storage. His lecture provides an opportunity to discuss electrochemical technology, and also learn from his experiences on how to spin out a successful start-up company from academic research.

Professor Nigel Brandon OBE FREng FRS holds the Chair in Sustainable Development in Energy and is Dean of Engineering at Imperial College London.  He is an electrochemical engineer whose research interests are focused on the science and engineering of electrochemical devices for the low-carbon energy transition, with a particular focus on solid oxide cells, flow batteries and hydrogen. He is a founder of the publicly-traded fuel cell and electrolyser company Ceres Power with a current market cap of 665 million GBP, and a founder of the flow battery start-up RFC Power. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Royal Society, and an overseas member of the US National Academy of Engineering. In 2011, he was awarded the merit Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to UK-China science in the field of energy and climate change.

The talk will introduce the role that electrochemical technologies can play in the low-carbon transition of the energy system.  Particular reference will be made to innovations in fuel cells, electrolysers and flow batteries, drawing on the speaker’s own experience in spinning successful companies out from academic research in these areas. Examples will also be given of current work within the speaker’s research group on solid oxide cells and liquid-gas flow batteries.
