Students from S&T's Applied Physics programme are making impressive contributions to stress reduction in education

On Thursday, June 15, during a lunch meeting at Ravelijn, three winners of AP's Student education Innovation Award 2023 were honoured.

The Applied Physics (AP) programme organised this competition as part of a pilot project initiated by the Dutch government aimed at reducing the workload for teachers, researchers, and students. Under the theme of a 'Smarter Academic Year,' the students of AP at the S&T faculty took on the challenge of proposing innovative educational changes that promote stress reduction.

Student education Innovation Award

AP's Student Education Innovation Award selection committee received a total of 17 groundbreaking entries from motivated AP students, making it a difficult task to choose the finalists. In the end, eight promising ideas were selected that have the potential to change the education landscape. The expert jury, consisting of Jennifer Herek, Alexander Brinkman, Arie van Houselt, Imre van Veldhoven, Edwin Lodder, Anita Weise and Sissi de Beer, chose the three best ideas from these innovative proposals. Voting also took place for the coveted Audience Award, the winner of which was announced to loud applause during the award ceremony.

After a brief introduction, the attendees first voted for the Audience Award, based on 8 short videos the students had created to showcase the most promising proposals. Then the jury's decision was announced. The first prize went to Naomi Spier, Hester van Wachem, Leonie van der Heide, and Liselotte Bokma, who convinced the jury to form tutor groups guided by senior students. Léon Goedegebuur and Coen Verschuur won the second prize with a well-developed skills curriculum, while Sasha Dekker received the third prize for the idea of 'Feedback in its Place.' Furthermore, during the announcement of the Audience Award, it was revealed that the top two choices of the jury were also the favourites among the voters in the audience. This confirmed that their ideas are truly excellent.

This recognition is a great honour for the winners and confirms that students can positively impact the future of education. It also highlights the importance of stress reduction in education for both students and teachers.

The success of this award illustrates the immense creativity and dedication of S&T's AP students. Their commitment to improving education and promoting the well-being of both students and teachers is admirable.
