THE HACKATHON ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN EDUCATION

On June 12, 13 and 14, 2024, the University of Twente and the Education Working Group of the Dutch AI Coalition | NL AIC organized the third edition of the Hackathon AI in Education. Eight teams were invited to work on their case to improve the quality of primary education, secondary education, secondary vocational education and/or higher education with smart technology? All teams worked on their inspiring cases in the University of Twente DesignLab using JEDIs;

On Friday, June 14, the teams presented their ideas to the expert jury: Maurice Van Keulen, Bram Enning, Jitske van Os, Claire Schaepelynck and Christel Wolterinck-Broekhuis.

After thorough jury deliberation, the Royal Auris Group was selected as the winning team: their user-friendly tool FABULA, allows the generation of a rich text based on a few target words, theme, reading level, length and shape, plus a talking picture and separately images of the target words. With their multidisciplinary team, in which everyone's expertise and knowledge was put to the best use, they immediately built a proof of concept based on teachers' needs.

Once again, we would like to congratulate the winners and thank all participants for the great energy, commitment and cooperation!Hope to see you in another edition of the Hackathon AI!

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an activity in which participants work non-stop on one particular case in a short period of time. The theme of this hackathon is AI in education. There is a lot going on around AI in education, for example ChatGPT. To participate in this hackathon, knowledge of artificial intelligence is a plus, but not required: there are also experts (Jedi's) walking around to support teams. In addition, all participants are asked to take an online professionalization course prior to the event.

Under the guidance of the Jedi, these teams will work on developing their own AI application for the chosen case during the Hackathon. On the last day the teams will present their solutions to an expert jury, which will evaluate the presentations and ultimately select a winner.

The hackathon is designed by the facilitation and professionalization zone of the Acceleration Plan Education Innovation with ICT. This hackathon is organized by the University of Twente and the Education Working Group of the Dutch AI Coalition (NL AIC), on the occasion of the Month of AI in Education. The month of AI in education is co-sponsored by NL AIC - working group Education, SURF, National Education Lab AI (NOLAI), Npuls and Kennisnet. Several events will take place during this month, including this hackathon!

    What are the threats to the robustness of analytics and AI?

    Analytics and AI are promising and society is increasingly dependent on them, but it's not all gold that shines. There are threats to the robustness of analytics and AI that we need to be aware of. We need to develop methods and techniques to detect and mitigate them so that our analytics and AI are guaranteed to be robust.
    In this talk, we highlight two such threats: lack of data quality and undesirable reasoning (learning shortcuts and stereotypical patterns).
    For a non-technical audience. No prior knowledge required, except knowing at a high level what analytics and AI is. The most technical term to use is “predictive model.”

    Why do we “need” to do something with AI?

    AI is often called a hype. But is that really justified? In this keynote, Barend Last, lecturer and author of “Chatting with Napoleon,” explains why we can no longer avoid AI. Because yes, pupils, students, business and society have found their way to it. Now all that remains is education.

WANt TO KNOW MORE ABOUT AI?

The term "Artificial Intelligence" (AI) was introduced in 1956 by scientist John McCarthy. He defined AI as "the science and technique of creating intelligent machines." In our society, more and more data is available. This data, combined with the growing computing power of computers and academic breakthroughs, is driving significant advances in the field of AI. Using AI, we can discover patterns in large amounts of data that mimic human thinking and rational reasoning. This includes the ability to generalize, argue, interpret and learn from the past.AI also offers many opportunities for education. It can be used in scheduling, service processes, improving equal opportunity, enhancing knowledge testing, facilitating place- and time-independent (lifelong) learning, and ensuring quality
