Enabling Smart, Sustainable, and Scalable battery solutions.
Sustainable energy storage is essential for tomorrow’s energy system. Batteries enable a dynamic match between energy generation and demand, and unlock use in heavy-duty sectors like trucking and transport, aviation, maritime, and construction. We develop high-energy-density batteries produced sustainably for those critical applications.
At Battery Centre Twente, research spans from novel materials to industrial scale manufacturing, all grounded in solving practical technical challenges in safety, durability, performance, and lifecycle impacts. We partner with industry to translate discoveries into solutions that meet real-world demands. This is embedded across our four Missions.
Four missions
At the European level, we contribute actively to the Batteries European Partnership Association (BEPA) and the BATT4EU program shaping Horizon Europe’s future calls. Nationally, the Centre plays a strong role in Growth Fund programs such as:
- NXTGEN High Tech, which is developing an integrated, scalable production chain for next-generation batteries, including new materials, solid-state designs, and pilot-line manufacturing with digital twins.
- Material Independence & Circular Batteries, where we lead initiatives such as Sustainable Long Duration Batteries (large pilot batteries for long-duration energy storage), Sustainable Bulk Batteries (new flow battery materials), SMART C-Batt (digital backbone for smart manufacturing), CIMBATT (heavy-duty trucking batteries), and NANEXBATT (next-generation sodium-ion batteries).
Our cross-border partnership with University of Münster and the Fraunhofer Forschungsfertigung Batteriezelle (FFB) connects us to world-leading expertise in electrochemistry, materials, and manufacturing. Together with institutes such as MEET and Helmholtz Münster, and through UT becoming a partner in the BACCARA international graduate program, we are building one of Europe’s strongest clusters for battery innovation. This collaboration integrates materials science, electrochemistry, nanotechnology, and advanced manufacturing to accelerate breakthroughs and strengthen the Dutch-German region as a global hub for next-generation batteries.
Battery Centre Twente is financially supported by UT's MESA+ Institute and part of Tech.Land.
